I got some more bees today! 🐝 This spring (when it was still cold like winter) we rebuilt the bear resistant bee cage to 6 x 12 in a new location and added a third level of electric fence. Now I have room for tons of babies and tons of honey! Until I can build up more equipment, we’ll just have to use the extra space as a dance floor.
This is what the package looks like when you pick it up from the post office. Most people handle it carefully and they arrive with very few dead bees. The silver thing in the center is a can of sugar water that they can eat from during their long trip. The queen is housed in her own little cage next to the silver can. The bees swarm her so her house is nearly impossible to see except for the minute that it takes to remove her, give her a quick check and remove the cork so the bees can eat the fondant that traps her inside. This process takes them a few days and by the time the bees release their hormonal queen, they are fully bonded and will die to save her.
