Mushrooms

I’m so excited to show you all of my mushrooming experiments! There aren’t enough hours in the day so here are a few pictures. Currently I’m growing Lion’s Mane, Comb Tooth, PoHu Oysters, Golden Oysters and Grey Dove Oysters in humidity tents right inside our home! I also have Shiitake logs inoculated outside

Crazy fact: the oyster mushrooms in the closeup photos below are growing on rolls of toilet paper.

Oh Shiitake!

Our first shiitake mushroom! It was so good we’re already dreaming of more. We inoculated 6 logs last spring and have let them sit in the shade behind our shed. We should have many more to come.

The Oysters are Outside

We’ve set up an old pallet in a shady area near our stream. My ever patient husband has done the heavy lifting to get my inoculated log totems up the stairs and outside. They are each made up of three 12-14″ full round sections (I’m trying oak and maple to see which works better). Two of them have a “cap” made from another two-inch-high log round and the third has a “cap” made of newspaper. The log caps worked far better than the newspaper. I had a hard time keeping the moisture level up with a newspaper cap and you can tell it isn’t quite as far along as the other two. Here they are for their debut outdoors after spending all winter in the dark and damp bags that I had set up in our spare room. I’m so glad to have them outside to begin fruiting and also to have the space back in our spare room. In the background on the right, you’ll see some of my shiitake logs that have just started producing. I have Golden, PoHu and Grey Dove Oysters this year.
